Location

Although the jury’s out on the exact borders of Tribeca, the neighbourhood and its surrounding area are undeniably walkable. Staying at this hotel puts you in proximity to Trinity Church, Battery Park, the 9/11 Memorial as well as One World Trade Center and the Oculus – a state of the art transit hub and shopping-meets-dining complex. You’ll be able to walk to all in less than 20 minutes. Plus, SoHo and Chinatown border Tribeca so you can meander to either area in less than 15 minutes.

This area is one of the best in the city for mass transit. Find the 1/2/3, J/M/Z, 4/5/6, A/C and N/R/W subways all within five blocks. Getting to Brooklyn and Midtown is a snap.

Style & character

The Duane Street Hotel boasts that home-away-from-home atmosphere. Character galore is what you’ll encounter should you stay here. Expect European sensibility, so much that you’ll think you’ve jet-setted off to London, or perhaps Berlin. Although long and narrow, the lobby provides plenty of space for guests to unwind.

Mid-century Modern furnishings comprise several seating areas and a conference table works well for eating a snack, working, and meeting. The tiny but well-stocked bar is a focal point. Meanwhile, a bar cart that holds antique glassware and several accent pieces of jadeite add a vintage touch.

Service & facilities

A small restaurant and lobby bar enable guests to grab a bite or beverage. Since the hotel doesn’t have a gym on-site, complimentary passes to Tribeca’s Equinox, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, come in handy. Apple iPads are available on loan as are Duane Street’s Republic bikes (complete with helmets and locks) for exploring Tribeca and beyond. Use around-the-clock concierge for securing reservations or directions – the friendly, accommodating reception team is at your service. Valet parking is available for a fee.

With your keycard, you’ll receive a checklist of things to do nearby, such as ‘Got bullish on Wall Street’ and ‘Sampled the apple pie at Bubby’s.’

Rooms

The quaintness of the Duane Street Hotel lends an authentic local vibe while feeling decidedly European. Rooms are small, but they’re thoughtfully designed, using every square inch of space. Room 606, for example, comes with a king-sized bed and a seating area separated by a smart room divider complete with a swivel television.

Both closets are tiny, but the drawer space is plentiful. Not only did the bath have a spa-like shower for two (the body sprays are a treat), but there’s a spacious half bath off the sitting area. Come check-out, you won’t want to leave what you might have fantasized your own New York apartment would look like.

Expect sumptuous beds and pillows, minibars, coffee maker, Chromecast for casting music and videos from your phone or laptop to the television, safes, L’Occitane bath products, robes, and quiet. Cityproof windows practically wipe out any street noise.

Food & drink

Indian with Persian flair, Graffiti Earth serves vegetable-centric tapas-size plates ideal for sharing. Chef Jehangir Mehta’s menu is limited and pricey for portion sizes – all mini dishes are either $12 (£9) or $17 (£13) – but features a variety of flavourful bites, many of which can be prepared gluten-free.

Anticipate veggie dumplings, garlic coconut soup, duck fried rice, and sloppy Joe-like Indian street sliders. Depending on your appetite, you’ll probably need three plates to make a meal. Reservations are suggested since this shoebox-size space holds no more than 20 seats.

Served in the lobby, bar, and reception area, a light continental breakfast consists of Greek yoghurt, granola, fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs, bagels with cream cheese, pastries from Balthazar, as well as coffee drinks and fresh juices.
